Now that the War on Christmas has been won by a thrice-married philanderer who ran for president as an aspiring theocrat, the North Carolina GOP has decided it’s time to win the War on Democracy.

 

First, Republican Gov. Pat McCrory and his allies spent weeks lodging useless election challenges before finally conceding to Democrat Roy Cooper. Then, after an emergency session called to aid flood victims last week, the GOP-led legislature resolved to respond to the real disaster — a Democratic governor who was duly elected by the state’s voters.

 

Over the course of a few days in December, the next governor of North Carolina was stripped of many of his executive powers, the only powers he’ll likely be able to exercise given that Republicans hold supermajorities in both state houses.

 

Sounds like democracy in action, right?

 

Voters obviously wanted to put a check on Democrats’ power by giving the GOP supermajorities — except they’re more like so-called supermajorities because the party’s 70% control of the state Senate and 74% in the state House came by winning 56% and 53% of the votes, respectively. That kind of disproportionate control is only possible because Republicans have gotten so good at picking their voters, not the other way around. In fact, they’re so good at it that it’s illegal.

 

A U.S. district court found recently that 28 House and Senate special elections must be held next year because the North Carolina legislative districts are the result of an unconstitutional “racial gerrymander.”

Obama Administration To Launch Sanctions, Retaliation For Russian Election Meddling

“The Obama administration is preparing to announce, as soon as Thursday, a series of retaliation measures against Russia for meddling in the US election, according to American officials briefed on the plans.

 

The actions are expected to include expanded sanctions and diplomatic measures, the officials said, in what the administration deems a proportional response to a Russian operation that went beyond cyber hacking activities common among nations.

 

Russia will respond to any “hostile steps” that the US may take in response to allegations of hacking during the 2016 election, according to the official representative for the ministry.

 

Some of the steps are expected to name individuals associated with a Russian disinformation campaign that US intelligence officials say used hacked information from mostly Democratic Party organizations and officials to attack the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign.

 

Official representative for Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, said in a statement on the ministry’s website, “If Washington really does take new hostile steps, they will be answered … any action against Russian diplomatic missions in the US will immediately bounce back on US diplomats in Russia.” CNN

Americans named Hillary Clinton the Most Admired Woman for the 15th consecutive year and 21st time overall. Since her initial win in 1993 as first lady, Clinton has topped the list every year but 1995 and 1996 (when she finished behind Mother Teresa) and 2001 (behind Laura Bush). Eleanor Roosevelt has the second-most No. 1 finishes among women, at 13.

 

First lady Michelle Obama finished second on the Most Admired Woman list this year, tied with 2012 as her best finish. The remainder of the top 10 most admired women include German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former and current talk-show hosts Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres, Queen Elizabeth of England, human rights activist Malala Yousafzai, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Massachusetts Sen. Washington Post is revealing just how afraid its bosses are of losing control of the official narrative,

 

In 2013, WaPo drew sharp criticism from alternative media outlets for not disclosing the fact that its new owner, Bilderberger and world’s fifth wealthiest individual Jeff Bozos, had secured a $600 million contract with the Central Intelligence Agency prior to the purchase. Disclosures of potential conflicts of interest are considered standard practice in journalism when an outlet reports on some area it may have a vested interest in; the Observer discloses at the end of every article involving Donald Trump that its owner Jared Kushner is Trump’s son-in-law, for example. To this day WaPo neglects to mention its own conflict of interest when authoring articles about U.S. intelligence agencies. 

 

I’m so interested in this because Bezos made his media purchase (which cost him less than half of what the CIA paid him) shortly after the U.S. government repealed a 1948 law which had made it illegal to conduct psychological operations (psy-ops) on the American public. The CIA is easily the world’s leader and innovator when it comes to psy-ops, which it has used to great effect in staging coups, toppling foreign governments, and manipulating public discourse the world over, and it just so happened to award a lucrative government contract to a politically active aspiring media mogul in the same year he purchased a major U.S. media outlet, which just so happened to be the same year it became legal for them to conduct psy-ops on U.S. citizens. Prior to the purchase Bezos had already made it known where his political loyalties lie when the web services division of Bezos-owned Amazon made the extremely controversial decision to pull the plug on WikiLeaks’ website, so he was already making it clear that he was a friend of the political establishment the CIA is responsible for propping up. This would not be the first time the CIA has actively inserted itself into American news media outlets, including the Washington Post.

 

So now whenever I see a major WaPo article going viral, I think to myself “Oh cool! Let’s see what the CIA wants us to believe today!” I just see it as a window of insight into what the political establishment and their cronies are up to behind the scenes. And from what I can tell by reading this latest article of theirs, what they are up to is losing their minds over the fact that the legacy media no longer controls the public narrative in America anymore.

 

In an absolute mess of an article, bizarrely titled “Schooled on Benghazi and Pizzagate, Trump team is heavy on conspiracy theorists” despite the fact that none of the Trump team they discuss ever said anything about Pizzagate and the fact that Benghazi is not a conspiracy theory, WaPo throws everything but the kitchen sink at their poor readers in a desperate attempt to keep them from believing anything the next administration might tell them about their country. In some two thousand tossed-salad words, the author of this meandering, rambling psychological operation seems to be attempting to communicate that some members of Trump’s team espouse what she disparagingly labels “controversial beliefs” that are outside of the mainstream narrative, from “paranoia” about the Federal Reserve to belief that Seth Rich was assassinated. If the author had some other point that she was trying to make, I don’t know.

The Electoral College Votes On Monday December 19, 2016, What Can Happen? Anything!

 

[NYT] “WASHINGTON — On Monday, 538 people will meet to determine who will be the next president.

 

These meetings of the Electoral College, convened in every state and the District of Columbia just shy of six weeks after Election Day, have long been little more than a formality.

 

But the victory of President-elect Donald J. Trump, who lost the popular vote but is projected to win the most electoral votes, has thrust the Electoral College into the spotlight once more. The conclusion of American intelligence agencies that Russia tried to intervene in the election to harm Hillary Clinton’s campaign has only intensified the focus in recent days.

 

President Obama on Friday described the Electoral College — originally a compromise between those who wanted Congress to choose the president and those who favored a popular vote — as a “vestige.” As electors gather in state capitols across the country, here is a rundown of what comes next.

 

Who are the electors?

 

In short, the electors are people chosen by their state political parties to cast votes for president and vice president. Electors can be state party leaders or elected officials; sometimes they are individuals with a personal connection to a presidential candidate. Bill Clinton, for instance, is a New York elector this year.

 

The number of electors each state has is equal to its number of representatives and senators in Congress — 538 in total, with those extra three electors coming from the District of Columbia.

 

What happens on Monday?

 

Electors will meet in their respective states, typically at the Capitol, where they will cast two votes: one for president and one for vice president.

 

They will then prepare what is called a “certificate of vote” with the results, which is then mailed or delivered via courier to the National Archives, where it becomes part of the nation’s official records, and to Congress.

 

Do electors have to vote according to popular vote results in their states?

 

Not necessarily. At least one elector has said he will buck his party and not vote for Mr. Trump. Nothing in the Constitution, nor in federal law, binds electors to vote a particular way. There are some state laws that bind them to vote according to the popular vote outcome in that state; others are bound by more informal pledges to their party.

 

Under some state laws, so-called “faithless electors” who vote against their party may be fined or even disqualified and replaced. No elector has been prosecuted for doing so, but then again, almost every elector has voted with their party’s results in the past. The Supreme Court has not weighed in on whether pledges and the related penalties are constitutional.

 

 Who counts the electoral votes?

 

On Friday, Jan. 6, at 1 p.m., members of the House and Senate will meet in the House chamber to count those votes. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., as the departing president of the Senate, is expected to preside over the count, during which every state’s vote is opened and announced in alphabetical order.

 

Mr. Biden will then declare the winner based on who has the majority of votes — at least 270. (That has led, three times, to an awkward moment when the sitting vice president has announced his own defeat, according to the House historian’s office. That happened most recently in 2001, to Al Gore.)

 

And that’s it?

 

Not quite. At that point, Mr. Biden will ask if there are any objections, and lawmakers can then challenge either individual electoral votes or state results as a whole. If an elector has chosen to vote against state results, that is the moment when lawmakers can petition to throw that vote out.

 

Objections must be in writing and signed by at least one member of the House and one member of the Senate. If there are any objections, the House and Senate then immediately split up to consider them and have just two hours to decide whether they support the objection or not.

 

Both chambers will then reconvene and share their decisions; if both the House and Senate agree with the objection, then they will throw out the votes in question. But Congress has never sustained an objection to an electoral vote.

 

After any and all objections have been resolved, the results are considered final. The next step is to swear in the winner on Jan. 20.”

In fairness to Secretary Hillary Clinton, both she and her campaign had forewarned everyone of Russia’s involvement to sway the Election to Donald Trump and Hillary’s disappointment with FBI Director James Comey’s Pernicious Letter, 11 days before the Election.

 

Hillary Clinton is going for the Political Kill and Donald Trump is a “Free-Fall Panic.” Trump just filed “Bogus Legal Action in an Attempt to Stop the Electoral College from Denying Him the Fraudulent Presidency.” Trump is on shady grounds because even Republicans are now on board investigating Vladimir Putin and Russia’s involvement in America’s Election.

As the swirl of allegations around Russia’s efforts to elect Mr. Trump roils Washington, one voice has been absent: Hillary Clinton’s.

 

John D. Podesta, Mrs. Clinton’s campaign chairman, broke the silence on her behalf, demanding the declassification of all information about Russia’s meddling as well as an explanation from the Obama administration of what it knew and when it knew it.

 

“We now know that the C.I.A. has determined Russia’s interference in our elections was for the purpose of electing Donald Trump,” Mr. Podesta wrote in a statement. “This should distress every American. Never before in the history of our republic have we seen such an effort to undermine the bedrock of our democracy.”

 

“This is not a partisan issue, and we are glad to see bipartisan support in the Congress for an investigation into Russia’s role,” he continued. “We believe that the administration owes it to the American people to explain what it knows regarding the extent and manner of Russia’s interference and this be done as soon as possible. To that end, we also support the request from members of the Senate Intelligence Committee to declassify information around Russia’s roles in the election and to make this data available to the public.”

 

Thrown on the defensive, Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary, said on Monday that the White House did not announce a major probe of Russia’s interference before the election partly because many voters would have seen such an announcement as political meddling.

 

He said Russia did not hack the electoral process or the counting of votes.

 

“But what is also clear is that the results of the hack and leak effort carried out on the orders of Russia were extensively discussed prior to the election,” Mr. Earnest said.

[The Atlantic] “The Constitution says nothing about the people as a whole electing the president. It says in Article II that “Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors.” Those electors then vote for president and vice-president. They can be selected “in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct.” This is to say, any way the state legislature wants. In 14 states in the early 19th century, state legislatures chose their electors directly. The people did not vote at all.  

 

Americans talk about democracy like it’s sacred. In public discourse, the more democratic American government is the better. The people are supposed to rule.

 

But that’s not the premise that underlies America’s political system. Most of the men who founded the United States feared unfettered majority rule. James Madison wrote in Federalist 10 that systems of government based upon “pure democracy … has ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property.” John Adams wrote in 1814 that, “Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself.”

 

The framers constructed a system that had democratic features. The people had a voice. They could, for instance, directly elect members of the House of Representatives. But the founders also self-consciously limited the people’s voice.

 

The Bill of Rights is undemocratic. It limits the federal government’s power in profound ways, ways the people often dislike. Yet the people can do almost nothing about it. The Supreme Court is undemocratic, too. Yes, the people elect the president (kind of, more on that later), who appoints justices of the Supreme Court, subject to approval by the Senate, which these days is directly elected, too. But after that, the justices wield their extraordinary power for as long as they wish without any democratic accountability. The vast majority of Americans may desperately want their government to do something. The Supreme Court can say no. The people then lose, unless they pass a constitutional amendment, which is extraordinarily difficult, or those Supreme Court justices die.

 

That’s the way the framers wanted it. And, oddly, it’s the way most contemporary Americans want it too. Americans say they revere democracy. Yet they also revere those rights—freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right to bear arms—that the government’s least democratic institutions protect. Americans rarely contemplate these contradictions. If they did, they might be more open to preventing Donald Trump from becoming the next president, the kind of democratic catastrophe that the Constitution and the Electoral College in particular, were in part designed to prevent.

 

 

Donald Trump was not elected on November 8. Under the Constitution, the real election will occur on December 19. That’s when the electors in each state cast their votes.”
