Donald Trump has literally tore up America’s creditability from within and Internationally and with each passing day, Trump embarrassments becomes bigger and bigger. Unless these problems are corrected immediately, America’s Elections and claims of Democracy would be nothing but a joke to many Americans and most importantly, around the world.

“In his short White House tenure, President Trump has already set a record for histrionic tantrums against the media — whether attacking CNN, The Washington Post, The New York Times or MSNBC for revealing his 2005 tax return, as he did last week. He’s actually pursuing a well-worn path of American presidents blaming the press for their problems.

 

Five decades of reporting have taught me that whenever a president starts screeching about the media, it’s a sure sign he’s in hot water and fearing revelations about some policy disaster, damaging mendacity or political villainy. Even popular presidents with reputations for charming the press occasionally stoop to blaming the press for quagmires of their own making.

 

Today, the issues are different, of course — questions about Mr. Trump’s peculiarly warm embrace of Russia’s leader, Vladimir V. Putin, and Russian intelligence agencies meddling in the 2016 elections on Mr. Trump’s behalf. But the clash of powerful institutions is similar.

 

Mr. Trump’s attack on the media for publishing leaks from the F.B.I. and domestic intelligence agencies succeeded for a few days in diverting public attention from his Russian connections. He and his White House Rasputin, Stephen K. Bannon, may also reckon that by savaging the press, they can intimidate Congress into softening its investigation into the Trump-Russia link.

 

But the focus has swung back on the central question: What is the president hiding? If his campaign is innocent of illicit Russian connections, why not welcome the investigation and clear the air? If, as Mr. Trump said last month, his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, was simply “doing his job” in talking with the Russian ambassador Sergey I. Kislyak about American sanctions against Moscow, why did Mr. Flynn lie about it?

 

More broadly, why has Mr. Trump evaded reporters’ questions about renewed fighting in eastern Ukraine or the Russian deployment of a new missile in conflict with a 1987 arms agreement? Why, after publication of his 2005 tax returns, does he still refuse to release his most recent returns? Will they reveal something that makes him beholden to Mr. Putin and Moscow?

At the State of the Union, a President Outgunned in Congress Is Still Combative [NYT]

The circumstances facing President Obama as he delivered his State of the Union address Tuesday night could not have seemed less promising: a presidency with only two years left to get anything done in a Congress that is now totally in the control of a party that has routinely ignored his pleas for cooperation. So he chose wisely to send a simple, dramatic message about economic fairness, about the fact that the well-off — the top earners, the big banks, Silicon Valley — have done just great, while the middle and working classes remain dead in the water. His remedy: skim from the rich and redistribute to those below, while deploying other weapons to raise wages and increase jobs.

 

He did not frame the debate over inequality as starkly as many economists have, preferring instead to talk about the virtues of “middle-class economics.” But he came close. “It’s now up to us to choose who we want to be over the next 15 years, and for decades to come,” he said. “Will we accept an economy where only a few of us do spectacularly well? Or will we commit ourselves to an economy that generates rising incomes and chances for everyone who makes the effort?”

Mr. Obama knows his prospects of getting Congress to agree are less than zero; Republicans dismissed his ideas before he even voiced them. That does not make them irrelevant. Mr. Obama was speaking not just to the present but to the future, to the 2016 presidential elections and even beyond. By simply raising the plight of the middle class (and, looming behind it, the larger issue of economic inequality), he has firmly inserted issues of economic fairness into the political debate. Hillary Rodham Clinton or whomever the Democrats nominate cannot ignore them now. Even Republicans, disinclined to raise taxes on top-tier earners, may find attractive the idea of doing something for those in the middle.

Now that the Republicans Control Both Houses of Congress and considering they haven’t done anything for 95% of the American people or America in the past six [6] years, one would think they would pass Jobs Bill, Veterans Benefits Bill, Infrastructure, Minimum Wage and Bills that would benefit the Working Class, Students, Poor and the Elderly. But that is not what they have done in their first week and now four days into their second week.

 

They have spent time and Money passing Bills that have no chance of becoming Law with the President promise to Veto any and all Bills that are not in the Interest of America or its people. However, they have passed Keystone, five [5] Abortion Bills, a Bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security with an Amendment to repeal President Obama’s Immigration Executive Orders signed in 2012 and 2014. They have also passed a Bill to defund Obamacare.

 

Perhaps, just perhaps, we need Laws on the Books that if Congress takes Money under false pretenses, they should be charged with a Felony and mandatory Prison time. Such as was when Debtors Law Existed. Perhaps one day in the near future “We the people would have an opportunity again to have a Government by the People and for the People.” At the moment the Republican Party is one branch of the Government that is for only 5% of the People.

President Obama hopes to make two years of free community college accessible for up to nine million Americans. I’m guessing the new Congress will squawk at the $60 billion price tag, but I hope the idea sticks, because more veterans, from Iraq and Afghanistan this time, as well as another generation of mothers, single parents and workers who have been out of the job market, need lower obstacles between now and the next chapter of their lives. High school graduates without the finances for a higher education can postpone taking on big loans and maybe luck into the class that will redefine their life’s work. Many lives will be changed.

 

Chabot College is still in Hayward, though Mr. Coovelis, Ms. Fitzgerald and Mr. Kennedy are no longer there. I drove past the campus a few years ago with one of my kids and summed up my two years there this way: “That place made me what I am today.”

Outraged over President Obama not attending Paris March is misplaced. Terrorist killed 12 on January 7; killed 1 January 8; French Authorities killed 3 Terrorists on January 9 and another on the run; France made a Public announcement January 10 that Terrorists Cells have been activated; Paris March set for January 11. Just how do you get the President of the United States amongst one million plus people without risking his life and that of many others?

 

All of the Media that are owned by six [6] Corporations really no longer report the News, the Media most of the time manufacture garbage and pass it on to the uninformed, ignorant, uneducated, brainwashed, hate-mongers, bigots, prejudiced and to some degree, racists, as though it is fact. Jake Tapper of CNN went as far as stating that he is ashamed of his country.

 

Despite France having suffered severe loss from Religious Fanatics the French Government including the Opposition and the French Citizens maintained their dignity in their time of grief. But not here in America where the right and left wing Nut Jobs go the extra mile to indulge in phantasmagoric rationales and internecine deluge, embarrassing themselves, but most importantly embarrassing the United States that view America as a National and International Disgrace.

 

President Obama has become the Piñata of senseless criticism, especially by Republican Legislators and their dumbfounded Trolls on Social Media that have allowed hate to usurp common sense and every ounce of decency from them.

 

President Obama from the time he took Office on January 20, 2009, both he and his Administration have been fighting Terrorists every day for the past six years. They have had some successes and some setbacks. What most people fail to realize is that Terrorists live for Terror, it is “Human Wickedness” and you can’t kill that with a Gun. And in that regard, perhaps, just perhaps, the world need to step back and reexamine the “cause” of this most disgusting symptom of killers, rapists and everything despicable to human society.

Republican Budget Cutting Almost Halved The Center For Disease And Control Emergency Preparedness, And Now They Cast Blame On Everyone For Ebola!

The Republican fetish with starving government has helped land West Africa in an Ebola crisis. The director of the National Institutes of Health made that clear when he told Huffington Post that steep budget cuts by Congress has set back the institute’s work on both prevention and treatment for the disease and that if it hadn’t been for a decade’s worth of cuts, “we probably would have had a vaccine in time for this that would’ve gone through clinical trials and would have been ready.”

 

It’s not just the NIH that’s suffered, and it’s not just in Africa where the cuts are harming people. The Center for Disease Control’s emergency preparedness budget has been nearly cut in half in just the past seven years. That means preparation at home. That means that local health departments in this country don’t have the funding—or the staff—they need to do the necessary preparation and training to deal with any epidemic. Judy Stone, MD is an infectious disease specialist, details the cuts at Scientific American.

 

The CDC’s discretionary funding was cut by $585 million during [2010-14]. Shockingly, annual funding for the CDC’s public health preparedness and response efforts were $1 billion lower for 2013 fiscal year than for 2002. These funding decreases have resulted in more than 45,700 job losses at state and local health departments since 2008. Again, it is not just the Ebola that is a looming threat. We need to worry about vaccine-preventable but neglected infections like influenza, measles, and whooping cough; the serious emerging viral infections in the US like Enterovirus-D68, chikungunya and dengue, as well as overseas MERS and bird flus, and natural disasters.

 

Just let that sink in a bit. $1 billion less for infectious disease control in 2013 than in 2002. The problems in the Texas hospital that led to one of the nursing staff contracting the disease could potentially have been prevented if the local public health infrastructure had the funding and the staff it needs to deal with a serious health public health threat. Meanwhile, Republicans will continue to screech that it’s all Obama’s fault and will do everything they can to terrify Americans about the (highly unlikely) Ebola epidemic at home. [DailyKos]

Legislating Ignorance About Guns And The NRA Puppets In Congress

“Eighteen months and dozens of school shootings after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., public-health experts still lack basic information on the roots of gun violence and how best to prevent it.

 

In 1996, at the behest of the National Rifle Association, Congress effectively barred federally financed research on gun violence. After Newtown,President Obama called for an end to the ban and asked Congress to provide $10 million to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study gun violence. He also included the $10 million request in his recent budget proposal to Congress. In addition, Democrats in the House and Senate have introduced legislation authorizing appropriators to provide funding.

 

Recently, however, Representative Jack Kingston, a Republican of Georgia and leader of the House subcommittee that sets the C.D.C. budget, toldProPublica that “the president’s request to fund propaganda for his gun-grabbing initiatives through the C.D.C. will not be included in the FY2015 appropriations bill.” Mr. Kingston does not have the last word; the full appropriations committee has yet to finalize the C.D.C. budget. But his stance does not bode well for gun-violence research or for science-based policy making more broadly.

 

The aim of such research is the same as research into any other health threat, like car crashes or smoking: to use scientific methods to chart the dimensions of a threat, identify remedies and address the problem collaboratively.

 

That is a different approach from one that views gun violence through the lens of law enforcement or mental health. And that is one reason the gun lobby and its toadies in Congress oppose it. It is potentially transformative, in the way that norms, behaviors and laws involving drunken driving and smoking have been transformed.

Questions that could usefully be examined were detailed in a report last year by experts convened by the federal Institute of Medicine at the request of the C.D.C. For example, the experts called for research comparing the probabilities of thwarting a crime with a gun with the probabilities of injuring a family member or committing suicide. Such data could upend the notion that guns are necessary for personal safety.

 

The report also suggested that research into mass shootings that actually occurred and those that were prevented could challenge that notion that mass shootings are inevitable in an open society. Other recommended research would examine how young people acquire and use guns, as well as the relative effectiveness of various gun-violence prevention strategies.

 

The price of ignorance on those and other questions is measured in tens of thousands of preventable deaths and avoidable injuries from guns, year in and year out. Compared with that, $10 million for the C.D.C. to study the problem and propose solutions would be a small price to pay. [NYT]

Of all of America’s Cable News, Fox promotes the most hate; runs down President Obama as if he comes at nights and steals their “only” underwear; have the most notorious, Obama Haters that are bankrupt of truth and decency that never existed before. Lou Dobbs, Smith Varney, Sean Hannity, Greta Van Susteren, Megyn Kelly, Bill O’Riley and the rest of Hacking Murdoch’s team lead by Roger Ailes, leaves an open ended question; “why would any sane person listen and follow these people?

 

Look at any of the shows on Fox and see who their repeated guests are; Rush Limbaugh, John Bolton, Newt Gingrich, Sara Palin, Donald Trump, and as for their guests from Congress, “they are the worst of the extreme right of the Republican Party.

The Congressional Budget Office [CHART] is definitive proof that as a share of the economy, spending on domestic and defense at today’s level are well below the long-term average. And the Congressional Budge Office projects that by 2023 discretionary spending will fall to 5.3% of GDP, the lowest since 1962.

 

To dig the country out of the great depression at the time George W. Bush left Office, in 2010 discretionary spending had reached 9.1% of GDP. This was largely due to the stimulus law that began under Mr. Bush and continued by Mr. Obama that saved us from becoming like Russia in 1990 – falling into the financial abyss.

 

However, it wasn’t that much higher than the 40-year average of 8.4% and was still below the 40-year peak of 10% reached in 1983 by the Republican Greed god – Ronald Reagan.
